Through The Haze
These images were created through printing copies of collected discarded photographs onto newsprint, then smudging the ink with water. Once the water had blurred the image I scanned in this print and reprinted it onto photographic paper. The blurring of faces in the images represents the distortion of memories over time. The loss of detail in facial features represents the fading of identities over time, how once someone has passed and there loved ones too, there identity is now lost, but this image of them still remains. This is now the only representation of their being. The book Through the Haze was created to emphasise the objectivity of the images. It was made to show a collection of memories faded whilst creating narratives through the series. The use of family images brings forth notions of connections and links between people and emphasises to the viewer the lack of information and knowledge we have about these people in focus. This emphasises the idea of loss of identity over time. The artist Gerhard Richter influenced this piece through his use of painting over photographs to create blurred and distorted imagery
